Come experience a taste of Japanese culture at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, featuring an array of activities highlighting traditional customs and beliefs from Japan. Witness the 16th century Samurai warrior, resplendent in the armour of the day, carrying out authentic demonstrations and giving a glimpse into the military and social side of what it takes to be an elite warrior. Sample delicious sushi while listening to the powerful Taiko drums and haunting harp like melodies of the Koto, all while watching graceful Kimono dressed dancers enchant and enthral. Also on display will be the fascinating art of Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging, that brings together spirituality and the natural beauty of nature. Starting from 10.30am until 4pm on Saturday June 18, this is one sun rise not to be missed.

Air Cadets make donation to Spitfire fund

Cadets from 238 Hartshill Squadron, Air Training Corps presented a cheque for £2,000 to the Lord Mayor Denver Tolley at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery Museum on Saturday May 21 at 10.30am, as a special donation to the fund to restore the museum’s historic Spitfire RW388.

The money was raised at the Air Training Corps 70th Anniversary dinner dance where the Lord Mayor was guest of honour, and was also attended by Spitfire creator Reginald Mitchell’s great nephew, Julian Mitchell, and Deputy Wing Commander, Squadron Leader Mark Brayford.

The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery is holding a special event looking at aspects of the landscape and exploration in conjunction with the Minerals Make Mountains exhibition. Activities will include an 8.5 metre rock climbing wall for mixed abilities, a comic look at the equipment and organisation of the fateful British polar exhibition to the South Pole and a rather large and angry volcano named Mount Ephesus, which will erupt realistically with growling unpredictable earthquake noises, clouds of gas and steam and a simulated lava flow. Taking place on the 5th of March from 10.30 – 4.00, this is one expedition that’s worth exploring.

City museum head and shoulders in front for world record attempt

As you may already know, the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery took part in the world record attempt for the largest game of head, shoulders, knees and toes. The record is currently held by Bendigo South East College in Australia involving 1632 participants. On the 1st of March, at 11.00am, 40 people at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery took part in the event, joining hundreds of venues nationwide.
The bid forms part of the ‘I Can Chatterbox Challenge’ aiming to raise money for children throughout the UK who struggle with communication. One in ten children in the UK start school with a speech, language or communication need. This year is the 10th anniversary of the Chatterbox Challenge with 2011 also being the national year of communication. The results are still to be released, but the museum would like to thank all those who took part.

Potteries Museum Gets Award

The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the Level 4-Communication Friendly Award from Stoke Speaks Out.
Stoke Speaks Out is a project that was set up to improve children’s communication by working with parents and carers in different venues and settings. The award was designed to help services and establishments that deal directly with children to achieve an environment that nurtures and encourages children’s communication.

To help raise £50,000 for our Spitfire Appeal you can now buy the Mk 16 Spitfire print via our online gallery and we will donate all our profit to the Appeal. The picture of the museum’s Spitfire is digitally mastered from a photograph and can be bought as framed or unframed prints or on canvasses.

Here at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery we’re commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and our centrepiece is a Spitfire that was handed over to the city in 1972. Some excellent conservation and maintenance work has been completed with the aid of public donations but we now need to help restore the aircraft to its original appearance, and to display those fantastic design features for which the Spitfire is so famous.

Another reason that makes it so special is that Stoke-on-Trent was the birthplace of its creator, Reginald Mitchell.
